Ancient Signs

A novel by Michael Hills

For three thousand years, human beings looked up and believed the sky was speaking to them. Early civilizations divided the zodiac into twelve signs. Chinese astronomers tracked Jupiter through its near-twelve year circuit and assigned Rat, Ox, Dragon, Tiger and the rest. For centuries, physicians consulted star charts before treatment. Kings read the sky before going to war. Then the Scientific Revolution came, and astrology did not survive it.No experiment could prove why a person born beneath one part of the sky should differ from a person born beneath another. By the twentieth century, astrology had become folklore. A private superstition people smiled at and read anyway. A cool tattoo. The devastating irony was that it had been right all along.
